I have the Acer Aspire One and the Asus 900HA and have installed memory upgrades on both. Although they are very similar (Atom processor, 160GB HD, 8.9" screen, 1GB RAM installed, Windows XP Home, etc) there are important differences worth mentioning.
(1) Size and weight: Asus wins here. 4-cell Asus is about 1" narrower in both width and depth and a little lighter than the 6-cell Acer (the 1" depth difference is due to the protruding battery from the back of the Acer). Thickness is about the same.
(2) Screen brightness: Acer wins here. Although the LCD panels are the same size and have the same native resolution the Acer screen is much brighter at max and appears crisper. Also the default Windows icons are way too large on the Asus (however, icon size can be adjusted using Windows).
(3) Upgrading: Asus wins big here. Remove a bottom panel with two screws from the Asus and you can easily swap out the single 1GB memory module for a 2GB module that costs about $30. You can

The Acer Aspire One is a great netbook. I proudly own the 6 cell White Acer Aspire One. This review is going to be mainly covering the 6 cell with slight mentions of the 3 cell. However, whether or not you should get the Aspire depends on your needs. I suggest making a checklist first to see whether or not the acer meets your requirements.
I used to own a HP Pavilion DV8040US (17"). It lasted 3-4 years, and worked well when it did work as a desktop replacement laptop. It died two weeks ago and I needed to get something to use for school. So I needed to get a new laptop.
I'm a busy college student constantly on the go with a definite need for a laptop. I wanted a new, small, cheap laptop that didn't have vista installed on it. The Acer Aspire One best suited what I wanted overall in terms of pricing, looks, and the goods it has. I initially purchased the 3 cell version from a local store, but ended up returning it so I could get the 6 cell version from Amazon because I liked it so much.

After spending several days checking out all the mini notebooks on the market I chose the aspire and have never been happier. The keyboard is perfect for my hands which I did notice most of the other mini laptops keyboards were sometimes awkward. I have windows xp 160gb very light laptop perfect for traveling which I do every week.
I highly recommend this computer!

Finally got mine this past week; am thoroughly impressed by the convenience of having this notebook with its decent resolution, actual touch-typable keyboard, and very good battery life (I have the 6-cell version; gets 5+ hrs). The LED screen is beautiful, the built quality is solid, etc. Only two things I wished were different: 1) the glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet (I'm not talking about smudges, but clear fingerprints that I can probably lift off with tapes a la CSI); 2) the second SD slot (there are two - one as a media reader, the other as storage space) can probably be replaced with an Express card slot instead as there's no need for more storage space with the 160 GB HD.
I know it's difficult to install more RAM, but based on my usage so far, I think 1GB is perfectly fine for XP Home and the Aspire One's intended purposes.
Also, the often-cited missing Bluetooth was easily addressed with an Anycom BT adapter - it's so small it only protrudes no more than a few millimeters.

Acer was probably the first company to offer this level of performance in a "netbook". With an Atom processor, 1gb of ram, a 160gb hard drive, a 6 cell battery and Windows XP home, it's a pretty credible unit if you don't mind a slightly small keyboard.
I already had a 17" Dell 9300, but after seeing the original eee realized I'd get much more use out of a laptop that was convenient to take along.
Goals were:
Small as possible with a keyboard I'd be able to touch type on.
Long battery life
Be able to run my SBIG astronomy camera.
Wireless Networking
decent performance for web, email, and running the camera.
I spent a couple months looking at what was available, and what was coming down the road. The eee 900 and 901 keyboards were just too small for me to be able to get used to. On line reviews brought my attention to the original aspire one. People were saying nice things about it's performance and build quality, and mentioned the keyboard was much easier to get used to than

This isn't the fastest, This isn't the cheapest, This isn't a macbook, dell xps, HP, ect. This is a Acer Aspire One Netbook. Price varies per retailer. I actually found my aspire one 160GB blue bundle of fun for 430 after taxes and shipping on a Canada website I trusted. If you look on amazon you will also see that it is listed by multiple retailers at different prices and some on preorder still. Nonetheless if you purchase a canada notebook you get a canada keyboard with is slightly different than the pictured one that I saw on some websites, also is taking me a little to get used too. All aspire one Touchpads are also different than standard notebooks, not just Canada's. Good thing I can deal with change unlike both our candidates who only like to talk about it... But I degress. no can not digress must move on. I couln't find any recovery media so first thing first after getting it. Call acer and request it. If they try and charge you call a different support number and ask for it to

Just got this little guy not too long ago. I have to admit that the Intel Atom processor is far faster than i thoought it was going to be. I am running XP just fine and have had absolutely no issues with speed when running MS and Open Office, IE7, etc. I'm even watching movies from Netflix with absolutely no problems! I upgraded the RAM to 1.5G however as another reviewer mentioned, it's not as easy as Acer should have made it. It required me dissasembling the entire case and fully exposing the circuit board. Typing is OK,but not great. The keyboard is tight but I can still manage to enter in text relatively quickly. Two main con's, there is no bluetooth and the supplied battery is only a 3 cell, with just over a 2hr life wtih screen backlight turned down all the way. Waiting for some longer battery life options, hoping to find some third party vendors selling soon! Otherwise, I am very happy with this purchase. I am finding that I am using it much more than I anticipated daily. At $350,

This little gem is perfect for travel, or just taking from room to room of the house. My wife and I keep ours almost exclusively on our couch or under our bed for access pretty much at our fingertips. The weight of this thing is incredible. I find the boot time to be plenty fast (use MSCONFIG to reduce some of the startup applications). We also discovered that although it doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, you can install CD-ROM based programs by networking another computer with this, so you can then access the CD-ROM drive of another computer using the Acer Aspire One. You'll have to "share" the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive of the other computer. After that, just insert the software disc and access it through the Acer. Presto, you can then install all your software on CD's without actually having to buy an external drive.
My ONLY complaint about this thing is that it is extremely difficult to upgrade the RAM from 1GB to 1.5GB. You actually have to remove the keyboard, facia, to get to the bottom

This little guy is really popular right now. I'd be tempted if it were a Linux box.
