Hellgate: London: Windows
The future of this game is doubtful. You may not be able to play it!

From the Hellgate forums on 7/19/2008:

"It is with deep regret that I must announce that Flagship Studios has laid off most employees. However, the core management and founding team members are still at Flagship." said Bill Roper, CEO of Flagship Studios. "The past five years have been an incredible experience for us, but unfortunately, we couldn't sustain the size of the company any longer."

...

"Due to the current situation, Flagship will not be taking any new subscribers for Hellgate: London, and all current subscriptions will not be billed."

iWork: Mac
If Apple took its cues from Microsoft, we wouldn't have merely one version of iWork. iWork 2008, in Microsoft parlance, could more aptly be described as "iWork Lite". Alternately, this version might best be billed as iWork Home. What about iWork Office and iWork School? Or iWork Superior to include all of the above? Don't count on it, at least not from iWork '08.

If the other reviews on Amazon and Apple are any indication, the only application in this trio that truly rises to the Microsoft Office challenge is Keynote. My beef with this suite pertains to my primary reason for purchasing iWork: word processing. Microsoft Office 2008 amounted to a series of alarming 1-star reviews at the time I purchased iWork 2008, and aside from that is enormously overpriced. More importantly, however, I wanted to reward any developer who dares compete with the Goliath that is MS Office by casting a vote with my pocketbook in favor of their product. Apple, after all, has been updating iWork long enough

Bioshock: Windows
Have struggled with Bioshock for several weeks now. I am finally throwing in the towel. Amazing art work and scene sets cannot compensate for the frenetic, shadowy and fleeting fps combat situations, all taking place in a dark, poorly lit (albeit artistic) underwater civilization. Give me the light and air of Half Life 2, or Crysis, or FEAR. My sense is that this a game for gamers--especially younger gamers, who might have the endurance and inquisitiveness/inventiveness to traipse through an endless array of beautiful, but ulimately obscure rooms/locales. Bioshock is beautifully crafted, but dreary, uninteresting, and not nearly as engaging as an fps as reviews had led me to believe.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: Windows
I purchased Age of Conan two days after its official launch. I played it for the duration of the initial free 30 day subscription you receive when you purchase the game.

* Be wary of reviews that only mention the area designed for new players, or extrapolate upon very minor features such as "character creation". These things, while strong in this game, are going to account for but a tiny part of your overall experience. My review focuses on aspects of the game that will affect your enjoyment from day one right on through day thirty - namely stability, content, and customer service. *

To start, I'll focus on the stability and quality of the application itself: Age of Conan is extremely unstable, being plagued by bugs that will crash your system for a variety of reasons. The game client has a lingering memory leak that has continued to wax and wane in prevalence since launch. As of the writing of this review, the stability of the client is still very poor and the memory leak is still very

Hellgate: London: Windows
I have played this game and it is fun but a bit clunky and repetitive. I would however like to point out that all developers at Flagship Studios have been laid off in July 2008 and that the current intellectual property ownership of this game is now uncertain or in doubt. What this means to new players is that the extra content patches that were promised on the box and in numerous reviews and on the game's website may or may not come to fruition. Please keep this in mind before purchasing this game.

Mass Effect: Windows
This is a review for those of us who saw Mass Effect on the console and happened to own a pc. So I'm not going to compare it to the console, let's just see how it stands on its own on the pc platform...

The plot is interesting. An evil villian wants to destroy the galaxy and you have to stop him. Ok, nevermind not so interesting. But the subplot is! Humanity has joined a galactic Council, and as the new kids on the block are seeking to prove themselves. During the game you'll find your loyalty to humanity and to the galactic Council at odds. The choices aren't clear cut good/evil like we saw in Knights of the Old Republic. While the plot may not be 'new', the game does a great job of making you feel like you are a part of a Space Opera!

Plenty of side missions though they don't seem to have an overall bearing on the game. There is a romance subplot which earned lots of hype and a temporary ban in Singapore and is so tame you have to wonder 'why'?

Voice acting is well done and used

Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties Expansion Pack: Windows
I am an original Age of Empires user - back when they came out with the very first one, I had it so this review might be a little biased. I love Age of Empires and play it with friends every now and then.

This game is fairly complicated but my 11 year old brother gets it pretty well. Basically you start off with villagers and a town center. The whole goal of the game is to gather resources to build up an empire. The more wood, gold, and food you get the more people, buildings, soldiers you can create.

This game is fairly PC intensive so if you have an old system don't count on getting the full effect of the game. I have a Quad 2.4Ghz system with a Nvidia 8800GT card and with all the settings turned up the fans are going 100%. That being said, the graphics are very impressive if turned up all the way.

The Asian Dynasties Expansion pack is pretty sweet - adds the Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian countries. The way they build is completely different than how the other empires build (say

Colorvision S3P100 Datacolor Spyder 3 Pro - Windows Macintosh
I work as a professional photographer so I might be too critical for most folks.
2003:
My first was the Spider plus on a Dell XPS. The monitor profile it created was Olive Green in the shadows (10-30) I was able to correct this in the driver pallet using a curves feature found on high end PCs.
2008:
On my new MacBook Pro the Spider 3 gave me the same looking profile that my PC had. Olive Green and warm in color. It does not look like the target file/print no matter what gamma or white point I choose! "Unfortunately, you have purchased Pro" that's the official response of DataColor/ColorVision! Then tried to sell me the Elite! My comment; So the pro is crap! They never wrote back after that.

They put their money in marketing not CUSTOMER SERVICE. I wasted $140 because I'm looking for something else!

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 with SiteAdvisor - 3 User-VIRUSSCAN PLUS SUB MINI-BOX 3U CROM
As I write this review McAfee is using approximately 100megabytes of memory. This is clearly a consideration if RAM is in short supply on your machine. McAfee has never had a light footprint when it comes to system resources and this version is no different (this probably won't be noticeable on newer machines).

The install process was easy on all three machines I installed the software on (2 running XP Pro and one running Vista Ultimate). In fact this version of the software uses a really convenient system where you register on their site to activate your software. This way you don't need to worry about losing your software key. Some may find that intrusive but I find it useful.

I think most people are familiar with the most basic function a virus/spyware scanner performs. It looks for pre-defined viruses/spyware and makes sure that you don't download, email or install them. McAfee has never been at the top of the list of virus detection but it isn't the worst either.

I think

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 with SiteAdvisor - 3 User-VIRUSSCAN PLUS SUB MINI-BOX 3U CROM
Still I did experience a bit of a slowdown, but nothing like with 360. I'm running Vista and I think that's part of it. I'm considering a downgrade. Actually, I'm going to. XP, worked great for me. Vista iCandy, no good, at least not for me.

That being said, this programs seems to do everything it's supposed to do. I've been using it for over a month now and have experienced no problems. It stays in the background and does what it's supposed to do without getting in the way and that's about the highest praise a program like this can get.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade with Service Pack 1: Windows
The all-purpose upgrade is only 'all-purpose' after several hours on the phone and in chat sessions with very courteous and willing people from far, far away. Seems MS forgets to include all the set-up steps in their
'works with XP & 2K' upgrade to Vista. Oh, and did you know that you will lose your reliable laser printer and many of your other PRE-Vista hardware and software tools....either MS doesn't speak their language or they do not speak Vista. It is like going back to the early days of IBM....the new model comes out and you can toss the old one, only MS is not the maker of the com-pooters...??? Apple keeps looking better and better, though so much more priceyl; if Mr. Jobs weren't such an eletist, marketing at the highest prices and caring nothing about the consumer's wants or needs....
You will appreciate the Vista help folks, when you finally are able to be transferred to them....they have a special department just for helping you load the software....if that doesn't give

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 with SiteAdvisor - 3 User-VIRUSSCAN PLUS SUB MINI-BOX 3U CROM
I've been running McAfee's anti-virus software for quite a while now and am satisfied with the product. It does the job it's billed to do without causing any of the slowdown problems that other users have complained of. (Although that is always a problem when using software of this type, so caveat emptor.)

One thing I don't like is that the software installs a clunky "SecurityCenter" that I don't care for and that consumes resources. The software also wants to install a firewall (I don't care for McAfee's version), privacy software and similar. I don't like it when programs attempt to foist bloatware on users like that.

But other than that, the software operates efficiently and effectively. It does consume resources, but if you have the latest generation of PC, that shouldn't prove to be a problem.

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 with SiteAdvisor - 3 User-VIRUSSCAN PLUS SUB MINI-BOX 3U CROM
Five Stars!!! McAfee VirusScan Plus is an outstanding product and an oustanding value. I was previously using Norton 360 Version 2.0 and it was an absolute dog, slowing my computer to a standstill. But this McAfee is just the opposite. Excellent virus protection, easy installation, McAfee SiteAdvisor, easy computer scans, and NO slowing of my computer. My computer is safe and I'm not pulling my hair out!

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 with SiteAdvisor - 3 User-VIRUSSCAN PLUS SUB MINI-BOX 3U CROM
Here is a note before I start off on the detailed review: I noticed another review which complained about his computer being very slow after installing McAfee antivirus - even I did noticed the slowness but that was only on the second day, maybe McAfee is trying to do some additional scanning or something like that, after 1 or 2 days, the system will be normal

Antivirus software market is very mature - both the market leaders in Antivirus - McAfee and Norton/Symantec offer equally good virus updates and protection.

But there are a few factors which make McAfee stand out:

* Cost - McAfee 3 user license costs $42 compared to $85 for Symantec(atleast as of this this day)
* Comprehensive protection - McAfee protects against Spamware and Viruses
* On access scan - This is something which you will hate as well as equally like : The Antivirus will always keep running in the background and scan each and every website you visit, each and every program you run. This will slow down things

Prosoft Manufacturing Drive Genius 2 - Macintosh
I was incredulous to find that the original copy of Drive Genius 2 that I received would not boot up an Intel Mac. I contacted Prosoft and they sent me not one, but two copies of the new, improved disk, which does work on my computer. Make you get the new improved version if you have an Intel Mac.

The Sims 2 Double Deluxe: Windows
Okay, I usually don't do reviews but I had to do one for this game. It's simply amazing. Three games for the price of one is enough to make this a worth while purchase but the game play just puts it over the top! I've heard about the Sims for awhile now but it just didn't interest me at the time. Then I purchased the game for my PSP and I liked it enough to purchase it for the PC.

And I was blown away.

To me it's WAY better on the PC and the game is more engrossing. I just can't pull away from it and most days I'm playing it well into the morning. To anyone who's never played you don't know what you're missing. Don't believe the hype? Purchse the game and you'll be a believer.

Diablo Battle Chest: Mac/Windows
Diablo II is by far one of the greatest games ever made for the computer. Absolutely incredibly fun and entertaining. There is a problem with the battle chest load discs for the mac:
You cannot download Diablo 2 and then download Diablo 2:LOD as separate downloads, it will not recognize Lord of Destruction (LOD) as an installable disc with all macs running 10.4 or higher, the way to get around this is to download them all-together. However when you do that, you have to select the download without ever putting in the cinematic disc, in other words, the download that is 1.3 GB (it will say it's a full download of D2 and LOD, just without the movies.) As opposed to the 1.7 GB one which will contain the movies.
Also, you may need to run the game in a separate window for it to display properly. For some reason it was very distorted on my 23-Inch Imac, and when I pressed control + "M" it will run the game in a separate window and fixed the distortion. You can max the game to 800 x 600 after

Battlefield 2142: Deluxe Edition: Windows
Buyer Beware!!!

This deluxe edition claims to have the booster pack Northern Strike as well but either this is not the case or EA has some serious problems here. Just search the internet and you will find numerous threads on this issue with the game deluxe edition.

In short, the game installs fine claiming that you are getting both the orginal version as well as the booster pack. However, once you are done activating and registering your account you can ONLY play the orginal BF2142 maps with no issues. But once you try to access any of the Northern Strike booster pack maps the game acts like you dont have the booster pack installed and directs you to EA link to purchase it even though the deluxe edition should have installed the booster pack already. I have sent lots of emails to EA but all i am getting are useless automated or cut & paste responses. As of now there is no real resolution to this issue. If EA helps me out I will update my post otherwise think before buying.

iWork: Mac
This is a great suite of programs for those of us who don't necessarily need the full power of the Microsoft Office suite. It will be able to do nearly all of what you want it to do in a non-professional environment (read home or possibly small business) for a whole lot less money than MS Office will cost.

That's where this suite shines. For $79 or less ($69 currently on Amazon) you get 80% of the MS Office functionality plus famous Apple-brand style. It's infinitely better than the hack-job "NeoOffice" for Mac which is the free OpenOffice-based office suite that is nearly unusable due to a bad translation.

Pros:
-Pages is a fine little word processor for writing virtually anything you can think of. It's simple to use and flows well with the rest of the "Mac experience." If you just want to sit down and type a letter or a book, it's hard to beat. This is the Apple equivalent to Microsoft Word
-Numbers is a usable spreadsheat program that will do some basic number crunching and data manipulation.
